Mirror Mirror: exploring light and space at San Diego International Airport

The Mirror Mirror art exhibition at San Diego International Airport (SAN) brings together contemporary artists who explore the interplay between light, color, and space.

On display throughout Terminal 2 in both pre- and post-security areas, this temporary exhibition runs through 2025.

A legacy of light and space

Southern California has long been a hub for artists experimenting with light, a tradition rooted in the Light and Space movement of the 1960s. Mirror Mirror continues this exploration, featuring over 100 works by 16 artists who employ materials such as LED displays, lightboxes, and immersive installations to create dynamic visual experiences.

An interactive and immersive experience

The exhibition invites viewers to engage with art in unexpected ways. From optical illusions to shifting color gradients, the works on display challenge perceptions of space and movement. Whether through reflective surfaces or interactive installations, the exhibition transforms the terminal into an evolving visual landscape for travelers.

Bringing contemporary art to public spaces

“We are thrilled to bring Mirror Mirror to SAN and offer travelers this unique visual experience as they journey through our airport,” said Kimberly Becker, CEO and president of the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority. “This collection connects viewers to the Southern California arts community and its legacy, enriching the airport experience with contemporary art.”

Supported by the Airport Authority’s Arts Advisory Committee, the exhibition underscores the role of public art in making cultural experiences more accessible. Open to all visitors, Mirror Mirror offers a rare opportunity to engage with cutting-edge contemporary art in a transit space.
