International Master of Fine Art: a research-based programme in Iceland

The Iceland University of the Arts (IUA) has opened applications for its International Master of Fine Art, a research-oriented programme that fosters critical engagement with contemporary artistic practices.

Located within Iceland’s dynamic artistic ecosystem, the International Master of Fine Art at IUA offers a unique environment for creative exploration. The programme is designed for artists seeking to expand their conceptual and technical boundaries while addressing pressing societal and environmental issues. The curriculum integrates artistic research, theoretical analysis, and hands-on practice, encouraging students to challenge conventions and experiment with new methodologies.

A multidisciplinary and flexible academic structure

The programme spans two years and consists of four semesters, each structured to provide students with a balance of guided learning and independent practice. The curriculum includes workshops, one-on-one tutorials, group critiques, and seminars led by established artists and scholars. Emphasizing interdisciplinarity, the university fosters collaboration across faculties such as architecture, design, filmmaking, and performing arts.

Access to specialized resources and expert guidance

Students benefit from state-of-the-art facilities, including video, photography, and interactivity media labs, as well as workshops dedicated to wood, metal, textiles, and printmaking. With small class sizes, participants receive tailored academic and technical support from both local and international experts, ensuring a comprehensive educational experience.

Artistic research and public engagement

Throughout the programme, students participate in site-specific projects, collaborative exhibitions, and critical discussions on contemporary art’s role in shaping societal narratives. A highlight of the first semester is a group residency and exhibition in northern Iceland, providing an immersive research-based experience. By the final year, students develop a thesis that combines theoretical and studio-based inquiry, culminating in solo and group exhibitions at established venues in Reykjavík.

A gateway to the Icelandic and global art scene

As the only art university in Iceland, IUA connects students with a diverse network of practicing artists, curators, and academics. The institution’s strong ties to the local and international art scene provide graduates with valuable exposure and professional opportunities.

The deadline for applications is April 8, 2025. For more information, visit lhi.is or contact lhi [at] lhi.is.
